What do you write?
Mark 198

Tell us a little about yourself… How long you’ve been painting and who you’re down with etc.
Summer of 73 is when I started and I stopped 1982. I was down with Mission Graffiti, BYB, OTB, The Boys.

So what brands of paint did you use most frequently in the early years?
Red Devil, Rust-oleum, Krylon, Utilac, Wet Look, Dupli-Color, car paint – Strauss Auto store carried them.

^Classic Piece Breakdowns: Rust-oleum ‘Federal Saftey Green’ fill, Krylon ‘School Bus Yellow’, Orange and Rust-oleum ‘Dunes Tan’ designs in the piece. Rust-oleum ‘Forest Green’ outline & 3d, Krylon ‘Baby Blue’ cloud with Krylon ‘Cherry Red’ & Black designs in and around the cloud.

Are you a can collector?
No, but I do have an old can of Rust-oleum from 1973 that was given to me by Comet 1.

Can you still find old paint stock in your area?
No not really, but I guess if you try going upstate NY you might find one of those mom and pop stores that might stiil stock them.

Any good racking stories?
I once went rackin with Dee 3 and Kit17. Me and Kit17 entered the store and left Dee 3 outside, he was holding our bags of paint
we had racked that day. We racked our cans and was about to leave the store when we seen Dee entering the store in a hurry and
told us one of the employees had seen us racking so we emptied our cans back out in the isle and started walking out the store
when the store guard stopped us and asked us to go down in the basement to check us for stolen goods. We agreed and went
down and to their surprise we had nothing on us. We had already dumped the cans, them guys were scratching their heads trying
to figure out what we did with the cans but we still had a good day of rackin’ that day regardless.

^Classic Piece Breakdowns: Red Devil ‘Delta Blue’ fill, Rust-oleum ‘Light Yellow’ designs, Red Devil ‘Empire Blue’ outline & 3d, ‘Avacado’ Green outline around Black cloud.

Any favorite old paint stores?
Woolworth’s & Martin Paints.

Best discontinued paint, and why?
Woolworths had an off brand name but it was really made by Red Devil but I really don’t recall the name.

Any good racked cap/can combos?
Red Devil had Jifoam oven cleaner, and Rust-oleum had Niagra and Scotch Guard and we always used the stock as a skinny cap!

Worst paint ever award goes to?
The Martin paint brand, the one with the gold paper label.

What are some of your best painting experiences?
Going to the layups 1975-76 was a pretty good year. Also liked Burke Ave, Baychester & Fordham layups, the D yard also. The D
pull in’s & pull out’s by Webster Ave and the 4 yard, that yard was our hangout.

^Classic Piece Breakdowns: Rust-Oleum ‘Sandlewood Tan’ fill, Rust-Oleum ‘Chestnut Brown’ outline and 3d, White and Orange designs, Red Devil ‘Delta Blue’ cloud with Black outline around the cloud.

How do you feel about the brands of Euro paint and their impact on the scene?
They are great to paint with, but you need 2 cans to equal a can of Red Devil or Rust-Oleum from back in the day.

If you could choose a few cans to have on your shelf, what would they be?
Red Devil ‘Chinese Red’ & ‘Delta Blue’, Rust-Oleum ‘Dunes Tan’, ‘Marlin Blue’, ‘Cascade Green’ and all the Fedral Saftey cans.
