What do you write?
RAPES DF/ATT

How long have you been painting?
18 years.

What brands of paint did you use most frequently in the early years?
Krylon and Rusto mostly in the early years.

^Takin’ it back… Rapes rocks a 67 Rust-Oleum, (Scottie), ‘Cascade Green’ in the fill!

Did you save any old cans from over the years?
Of course… I’m a collector by nature but I used my cans as well.

Can you still find old paint stock in your area?
Not near me – I wiped that out years ago.

Do you miss any favorite old paint spots?
I’ve had 3 or 4 that were really dope over the years, however with all the Home Depot’s etc, moving in all the little Mom & Pop shops have all but closed down.

Best discontinued paint, and why?
I love old Krylon… The Borden years were my favorite. The colors, the smell, how fast it came out of the can – all DOPE!!! However, as Krylon changed the formula the paint became more and more like colored water.

^Rapes’ partial collection of 60s Krylon!

Ever found some racked caps work good with certain paints?
We would use these Spray and Wash clothing cleaner caps that looked like Rusto orange dots, but with blue centers. It was a local thing that everyone knew about.

Worst paint you ever used? Most notorious colors to avoid?
Worst paint! Ha ha ha… I’ve used them all! From the dollar store crap to Euro paint… every brand. The worst colors seem to be Yellows and Oranges. I think it’s hard to find an old school Yellow that will color thick – Rusto was the best.

What are some of your best painting experiences?
I have been lucky enough to travel all over the word and paint with the crew. These guys are like family – I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

How do you feel about the brands of Euro paint and their impact on the scene?
I love Euro paint. It came at the right time, just as everyone was switching formulas on the paint and now they switched the whole cap system. Euro paint covers great and has a ton of colors, etc. I think it costs a little too much, but whatever… If I could use old Krylon and Rusto on every piece I would.

If you could choose a few cans to have on your shelf, what would they be?
That changes as I find stuff, but I still look, just not as much.

Any projects going on right now or in the near future?
I’ll just keep doing my thing.

Your thoughts on CMC documenting spray paint history?
I think it’s great!!! There are so many different cans, labels, artwork, stories, etc. I love that stuff!

Comments, shouts, honorable mentions?
I have to give a huge shout out to East, ATT and Nace (RIP). These were some of the first guys that let me know what’s up with old paint.

I started collecting in 1995. Nace was on that shit years before, he would telI me stories of buying 40+ cases of Jungle Green from old store in Jersey! Ha ha ha… he hooked me up with my first 6 pack of Jungle! He also gave me my first Pineapple Yellow which I think he found with Pre somewhere. He was such a great guy and a huge part of the collecting scene.

He is missed by many…

Shouts to all of the dudes in DF/ATT! You know who you are…
